Gel printing

Create unique patterns with gelli printing

Gel printing, also known as gelli printing, is an incredibly fun technique where you create your own patterns on a gelatin plate. You can then transfer this pattern to, for example, paper or fabric. What you need is basically the gelatin plate itself, a brayer, and acrylic paint. That's the core of it. The brayer is like a roller that helps you roll out a thin layer of acrylic paint onto the gelatin plate. It's really important to apply thin layers of paint.

A few tips along the way

About Gel printing

You can create various patterns with exactly what you want. Your finger, brushes, stencils – your imagination is the only limit. Then you place a piece of paper on top and gently rub it with your hand. Peel off the paper and there you have your own unique artwork.

Remember to let it dry thoroughly between layers. Especially the last layer can be left for a long time with the paper on top. Patience is key! But it's worth it!

You can build up layer by layer with different patterns and colors. You can also use printouts from laser printers or images from certain magazines, but learn the basics first. Play around step by step and start simple. This is to get a feel for how the paint works, how much paint to use, if it needs to dry for a while, etc.

Gel printing is really fun. You can create backgrounds for cards, artworks, scrapbooking, and mixed media projects. Print on fabrics and create entirely unique bags, pillow covers, etc. There are endless possibilities to explore. Create your own art wall with prints of a growing baby's footprints. A photo wall inspired by Andy Warhol's works. General abstract art to naive art. Simply play and have fun, experiment.
